Prescription Vial Hummingbird Feeder

This is a little different take on the homemade hummingbird feeder. This will yield small feeders, so you'll need to keep on top of filling them or your birds will be a little unhappy. On the other hand, they are easier on the eye than something made with a 2-liter bottle. So what will we need to make these feeders? It's very easy:

- Prescription vial, like you'd get just about any medication in. Make sure that you've cleaned them out very well, and try not to leave soap residue in the container.
- A length of wire or something else to hang the feeder with
- Tape, preferably duct, of course, although with these little feeders you could probably get by with something lighter weight.
- Red paint
- Something sharp for poking holes

Alright, so what do we do with the pile of stuff sitting in front of us now?

1) Make a couple of small holes near the top of the prescription vial, but be sure to leave enough room so that the holes are still accessible when the cap is firmly in place. These will be the feeding holes. Take care that you don't leave sharp edges on the holes.

2) Affix the wire to the vial by attaching it with the tape. It's best to do this step with the cap off so that you don't accidentally secure it in a way that prevents the cap from going on and off easily.

3) Use the paint to cover as much of the feeder as possible. Hummingbirds are attracted to the color red, and especially since this is a small feeder, we need to make it as easy to find as possible.

4) Fill the feeder with nectar (or your own concoction). Put the cap back on and turn it upside down. A little bit of the liquid will probably escape through the hole, but it should stop leaking almost right away. Then just hang it by the wire or string or whatever you attached.

It can be a good idea to make a few of these feeders and hang them together in a cluster. This makes them easier to find for the birds, and also helps out a bit if you forget to fill one up - they can always fly to the next one over to find a bite to eat.
