Plastic bottle hummingbird feeder
Here's a great way to build a homemade hummingbird feeder out of materials you probably have around the house. As a bonus, you'll be recycling them into something that's actually useful.
First you'll need some items to use in the construction:
- A plastic bottle, as from water or soda. Think 12 or 16 oz, not a 2 liter.
- A clean deli container
- Some bendable wire, 8 gauge or so, or some other hanging device
- Red paint, something that will stick to plastic
And also some tools:
- Hammer and nail
- Something sharp that can cut plastic
- Small paint brush
And now for the steps to make it:
1) Punch a hole in the cap of the bottle. You can either use the tool you have for cutting plastic, or use a hammer and nail.
2) Cut a large hole in the deli container as close to the center as possible. It needs to be large enough (and just large enough) to fit around the mouth of the bottle. Make sure that it fits tightly.
3) Cut small holes in the deli container for the birds to feed through. These are called feeding stations.
4) On the back side of the lid, make sure that there aren't any sharp edges that could cut the hummingbirds as they are feeding.
5) Use the red paint to decorate the bottle and container however you like. Red attacts the birds, so don't be shy.
6) Take the wire and wrap it around the bottle. You want this to be secure since it will be supporting the feeder.
7) At the end of the wire, twist it back on itself to form a loop which can be used to suspend the hummingbird feeder.
Now you just need to pick a spot that will be likely to be found by the birds, fill your feeder with nectar, and sit back to enjoy the show.
